South Carolina Update- 1 Day Left!

Yesterday was Ryan's birthday. His 19th birthday. Which means, in 364 days, he'll be 20. That's crazy. Two decades.

Yesterday's Activities:

  • At 6:00 am, Aunt Nancy and I woke up and had some coffee. We then left at around 6:45 and took Lucy down to the beach for a quick walk. We left the beach at about 7:45, and decided to go to the Sea Cow restaurant to get some  breakfast. There, we sat on the patio and watched little golf-carts whiz by with beach-goers riding in them. (Edisto is the kind of beach town where it's small enough that it is common to rent or buy a golf cart for the people who live on the island. Some people decorate their carts with college colors and flags, and some were patriotic for the 4th of July.) After I finished eating my buttery homemade biscuit and jam from the restaurant, we left to go to a store that sold fishing poles. We wanted to get Ryan a good present that he can use when he's older. Since he's been here, he's been really into fishing. Aunt Nancy thought of the idea to get him a fishing pole because he can use it here, in SC, and in Harstine (located on the Puget Sound).  We picked out a sturdy rod because while Ryan is fishing with the current pole here, he'll get strong tugs and the pole isn't strong enough to reel up the fish, so he needed something that would help out with that.

  • We arrived home at around 10:00 am after picking up Ryan's chocolate birthday cake from the local market. (where all of their baked goods are fresh and homemade...delicious) Ryan was already up, excitedly explaining how he turned 19 at around 3:00 am. We gave him his present, and he loved it! He's been using it all day!

  • At 11:00 am, we headed for the Charleston Riverdogs baseball game. It was "splash day", so we thought that in between innings they'd maybe spray people with squirt guns or something like that, but no. We were wrong. Walking into the stadium was a shock. There were little kids everywhere. Many of them wearing bright neon t-shirts that corresponded with different day camps. They were squirting each other, running from one another, and also squirting strangers. Like us. One minute I'd be walking, thinking I was in the safe zone, hoping not to get squirt in the face, the next, a little rascal would come up and squirt water right at me, laugh so hard that you'd think they'd never seen anything funnier in their lives, and then run away. The game itself was great; the Riverdogs are a farm team for the NY Yankees, and they ended up winning. YAY!

Today was an eventful day. We went to the beach, lunch, and came back and kayaked for a while. Aunt Nancy provided a little entertainment when she dropped her flip flop in the water off the dock. She had lost one the day before, and so now she was down to two pair, possibly one if she didn't get this one back. When asked what was wrong with the other pair, she gave us the impression that they weren't stylish, that she shouldn't be seen in public in them. So, with that, Aunt Nancy marched down the dock in a life jacket, quickly untied the kayak, and paddled after her flip flop which was swiftly floating down the channel with the current. She disappeared behind some tree branches, and, before you knew it, she was shouting, "I got it!!!" Poor Aunt Nancy.

Later tonight, Aunt Nancy and I decided to go for another kayak trip. We paddled for about 10 minutes, and then went off into the marsh land where there are little passage ways that are good for exploring. In the distance, a bright green ring was visible behind some tall grass. Aunt Nancy didn't hesitate to go over to the tube and grab it, because you know, who wouldn't want a random floating tube? To my surprise, we found yet another tube further in the marshes. Aunt Nancy managed to fit both tubes on her kayak and use them as a foot rest for the rest of the way back. There's always a new adventure with her!

Lastly, I just have to throw it out there that we have SO MUCH FOOD. I'm overwhelmed with how much we have. I never know what to eat for breakfast or lunch. All these leftovers have to go, or else they'll go to waist! How did we think that us 3 could finished 3 pies, 1.5 cakes, 10 hamburgers, a huge bowl of pasta(could feed probably 6 people with heaping servings), 2 loaves of bread, and a jumbo bag of marshmallows, 2 boxes of gram crackers, and 6 dark chocolate Hershey's jumbo sized bars? I don't know. I mean, I'll help out with the cake and the s'mores, but I just don't know how much I can take! It's sugar overload!!

Here are some pictures to act as an overview of this week:

Ryan fishing!

Lucy. She's a good sport.

King's Street from last week!

Not edited! Sunset from a few nights ago!

The sunsets here are truly amazing, and they are even more amazing when I get to kayak right next to them.

Ryan and I on the kayaks!

As you can see, Ryan's paddle is right next to my face. This is because he was in the process of whacking me in my face with it! I'm feelin' the love, Ryan.

No edit. A little bit after the sun set a couple of nights ago. It was kind of a dark, eerie feel but so cool, too.

Not quite sunset, but it's always beautiful! I thought the rays of sun looked so cool shining through this cloud!

Aunt Nancy with her tubes that she found. She's so funny!
