A New Season for the New Season

Little things are the things that count.

I had my first real basketball practice of the year this week. My coach...yeah, he's a toughie. Very nice and helpful. Except he has his rules... and rules are rules. If he feels like we aren't working as a team well enough, or giving practice our all, he has us run, or do some sort of body-aching drill. I like this.
Well, I don't like the drills. I don't like panting and being out of breath. I don't like the aches and pains. But, I know that this is all for good. All of this strategy is to make us as a team better. To make us work harder. To makes us work together, and be comfortable with each other. To make us have goals; these goals are to simply not mess up. This truly helps me, as an individual, to progress. We work on little things, that, in the end we put all together, and they all make up the game of basketball.

My coach, Todd, explained that he "likes torture. Don't worry, not actual torture just working you all hard". He also explained that he doesn't mean to be...well, mean. He said that "we are going to work. We will work hard on the little things and then once those are good we will work on the big things. Ok?" Yep. Ok, coach. Got it. This is the kind of coach I've been waiting for!

We do drills until each of us has done it successfully. I like my team because I barely know them so far, and they are already so supportive and welcoming. They cheer for each other at every made basket, or every missed basket; by this I mean the bravo goes to the defense.
They're just a great group of girls to be around, and I can't wait to play our first games this weekend.

Yikes!
I have friends on one of the teams that we are playing against. One of them keeps saying how much they will "cream" us and how much she is going to "kick my butt". I just didn't answer in any comeback type of reaction. I didn't act mad. All that I said was, "Ok, we'll see." Because I'm not about to say that my team will win. On the other hand, I am sure as heck not going to say "..oh, we'll probably loose.." because 1) that would be rude to my team. 2) I don't really agree with that statement, therefor I wouldn't be telling the full truth. So, that is why I gave a simple three-word reply.

I like this training, though. I really, really do. I feel like I'm going places and that I am progressing faster than I have before. I love all of the coaches that I have had in the past, too. This is just different for me, and I like it.

It will be a great season.
